Seymour Driving School FAQs

Seymour Driving School has offered one-on-one driving lessons in North Vancouver and across the Lower Mainland since 2015. Below are answers to the questions we hear most about prices, ICBC road tests, and BC’s new licensing rules.

We offer driving lessons in North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Vancouver and Burnaby.

In North Vancouver, pick-up and drop-off are available at your preferred location. For Vancouver, West Vancouver and Burnaby, pick-up and drop-off are generally arranged at the selected ICBC location.

We offer two lesson options:

  • 60-minute lesson: $70

You can pay online by credit card. E-Transfer and cash payments are also available.

Yes. Our Basic Package is $400 and includes six hours of one-on-one driving instruction.

You can take the six hours as:

  • Six 60-minute lessons, or
  • Four 90-minute lessons

This saves $20 compared with booking six individual 60-minute lessons.

We also offer additional packages for students who need more practice or road test preparation.

Every student is different, but a complete beginner typically needs around 15 hours of professional driving instruction to become road-test ready.

Some students may be ready with fewer hours, while others may need additional lessons. Your instructor will assess your progress and let you know when you are ready for the road test.

For learner drivers, all ICBC licence restrictions must still be followed.

Licence, Road Test & ICBC

You must have a valid licence that legally allows you to practise driving in British Columbia.

This may include:

  • A valid BC Class 7L (Learner’s) licence
  • A valid BC Class 7 (N) licence
  • Another valid BC driver’s licence
  • An eligible and valid driver’s licence from another Canadian province or another country

Please bring your driver’s licence to every lesson. If your licence requires glasses or contact lenses while driving, you must also wear them during your lesson.

Yes. We help newcomers prepare for the ICBC licensing process and road test.

Lessons can cover BC traffic rules, local driving conditions, intersections, lane changes, parking, highway driving and the safe driving skills ICBC expects.

If you have moved to British Columbia, you generally need to switch your foreign licence to a BC licence within 90 days. Different rules may apply to visitors, international students and some temporary residents.

Yes.

Our Road Test Preparation Package is $160 and includes:

  • A one-hour preparation lesson before your road test
  • Road test check-in support
  • Vehicle registration/check-in for the test
  • Use of the Seymour Driving School vehicle for your ICBC road test

Please contact us before purchasing the package so we can confirm vehicle and instructor availability.

If you only need the school vehicle for your road test without the preparation lesson, the vehicle-only option is $100, subject to availability and instructor approval.

Most students book their road test directly through ICBC.

However, if you have purchased a package from Seymour Driving School, we can also help book your ICBC road test appointment on your behalf if requested.

Road test appointments are always booked through the official ICBC booking system.

Yes.

Starting October 19, 2026, eligible Class 7 Novice drivers will no longer need to take the second road test that was traditionally required to move toward a Class 5 licence.

Instead, ICBC will use a Driving Record Assessment to determine whether the driver qualifies to upgrade.

Eligibility depends on your age and driving history.

If you are under 25, you generally need:

  • 24 months of safe driving with your N, or
  • 18 months if you successfully completed an approved GLP course during your learner stage.

If you are 25 or older, you generally need:

  • 12 months of safe driving with your N

During the applicable period, you must also have:

  • No driving prohibitions
  • No licence suspensions
  • No convictions for excessive speeding
  • No convictions for using an electronic device while driving

Once you meet the requirements, ICBC can assess your driving record for eligibility to move to Class 5.

Not necessarily.

ICBC looks at your driving record, including prohibitions, suspensions, excessive-speeding convictions and electronic-device convictions.

An accident by itself is not automatically listed as a reason that you must take a Class 5 road test.

Your eligibility is determined by ICBC based on your driving record and the rules in effect when you apply.

Yes.

Even without a second road test, additional lessons can still help improve your confidence, judgment and everyday driving skills.

We can help with:

  • Highway driving and merging
  • Lane changes
  • Parking
  • Busy intersections
  • Defensive driving
  • Difficult road or weather conditions
  • General confidence and skill improvement

We do not currently offer a separate course specifically for the new Driving Record Assessment.

Booking, Cancellation & Refunds

Please cancel or reschedule your lesson at least 48 hours before the scheduled lesson.

If you cancel with less than 48 hours’ notice or do not attend, the lesson will be considered used and you will lose that session.

You must cancel your road test vehicle booking at least 48 hours before your scheduled road test.

If you cancel later than 48 hours or are unavailable when the vehicle has been reserved for your test, the $100 vehicle booking charge is forfeited.

Lessons that have already been completed are non-refundable.

If you prepaid for a package and decide to stop your training, Seymour Driving School will refund 80% of the value of your remaining unused lesson hours.

Refunds are issued by E-Transfer, and you will be asked to sign a refund receipt.
