What Is a Class 5 Driver's Licence in
BC?
A Class 5 licence is British Columbia's full-privilege passenger-vehicle licence.
For drivers progressing through the Graduated Licensing Program, Class 5 traditionally follows the Class 7N novice stage.
Under the current system, eligible novice drivers may still progress by completing the Class 5 road test. However, B.C.'s licensing process changes on October 19, 2026.
From that date, eligible drivers progressing from Class 7 will move through ICBC's Driving Record Assessment process instead of completing the second road test.
Because eligibility can depend on your driving history and individual situation, it is important to confirm your current requirements with ICBC before planning your Class 5 preparation.

Do I still need a Class 5 road test after getting my N?
The rules are changing. Until October 19, 2026, the existing GLP process remains relevant for drivers who are eligible to complete it. Effective October 19, 2026, ICBC is removing the second road test for eligible drivers and introducing a Driving Record Assessment for progression from Class 7 to Class 5. Check ICBC's current GLP requirements when you become eligible to upgrade.
