The Class 7 road test is not simply a test of whether you can operate a vehicle. ICBC examiners look at how safely, smoothly and consistently you make decisions while driving. How the Class 7 Licensing Process
Works in BC
British Columbia uses a Graduated Licensing Program to give new drivers time to develop their skills before receiving full driving privileges. For most new drivers, the process begins with a Class 7L learner's licence and progresses to the Class 7N novice stage.
Step 1: Get Your Class 7L Learner's Licence
You can apply for your learner's licence on or after your 16th birthday. If you are under 19, parental or legal guardian consent is normally required.
You must pass the ICBC knowledge test and complete the required screening before receiving your learner's licence. The knowledge test covers B.C. road rules, signs and safe-driving principles.
Once you receive your L, you can begin gaining practical driving experience with a qualified supervisor.
Class 7L drivers must follow ICBC learner restrictions, including displaying the red L sign, maintaining zero alcohol and drugs while driving, avoiding electronic-device use and following passenger and driving-hour restrictions.
After holding your L for at least 12 months and remaining eligible, you can take the Class 7 road test.

Pass the Class 7 Road Test and Get Your N
The Class 7 road test is the practical assessment that moves you from the learner stage to the novice stage.
During the road test, the examiner evaluates whether you can drive safely, smoothly and with appropriate control in real traffic.
ICBC states that the Class 7 road test, including the review at the end, takes approximately 35 minutes.
Once you pass, you receive your Class 7N novice licence and can drive independently, subject to novice-driver restrictions.
N drivers must continue displaying the green N sign and follow ICBC restrictions regarding passengers, alcohol, drugs and electronic devices.
Important 2026 update: British Columbia's Graduated Licensing Program changes on October 19, 2026. The second road test traditionally used to move from Class 7 to Class 5 is being replaced for eligible drivers by a Driving Record Assessment. Eligibility requirements depend partly on age, driving history and whether an approved GLP course was completed. Always check current ICBC requirements when you are approaching the Class 5 stage.

We begin by looking at how you currently drive rather than putting every student through exactly the same lesson. Your instructor observes your vehicle control, awareness, positioning and decision-making in real traffic. From there, the lesson focuses on the areas most likely to affect your safety and road-test performance. As your test approaches, training can become more assessment-focused. You may practise driving with fewer prompts, work through common test situations and complete mock-road-test-style driving so you can see which habits still need attention. After the drive, your instructor explains the important corrections and what you should continue practising before your test.
